The Return to England

The Pinks left Australia on July 20, 1928, to return to his native land of England. They had visited his homeland previously, but this is the first return with the thought of a possible stay in England, as they hoped to find a place of service there. Pink was forty-two years old at this point in his life. It is certain that he left

Australia with deep sorrow over the experiences of the past three years. The move was not caused by any definite promise of a ministry in England, but by the rejection in Australia, and his desire to see his aged parents. He comments on his reasons for his return to his home land in two different places:

The Lord made it clear to us that the work for which He brought us to Australia has been accomplished. All praise to him, for His counsel "shall stand" (Isa 46:10). The next place in which we believe He would have us pitch out rent is London, England. We have received no human call or invitation; there is no "open door" apparent to sight. We are acquainted with very few of the Lord's people in London, and most of them who have heard of us are likely to be prejudiced because we are outside of every thing ecclesiastical. For all of this we are truly thankful, as it affords another opportunity to prove the faithfulness of Him who never disappoints those whose expectations are (by grace) in Him alone.1

When God made it clear that the work for which He took us to Australia was finished, the editor [Pink] felt it his duty to visit his aged parents, who he had not seen for thirteen years, hoping he might be permitted to settle in England. Only one who has carried the entire responsibility of editing and publishing a monthly magazine can appreciate what it involves to arrange for it to be printed without any hiatus, and for each to arrive promptly in the hands of its readers during a move from one side of the world to the other—to say nothing of packing and transferring a huge library such a distance.2

It seems from the second statement that Pink was hopeful of not only returning to England, but even of staying there permanently. He also, as will be seen, was hopeful of opportunities of public ministry, even though he was now outside of organized Christianity. Concerning their arrival and reception in London, Pink wrote:

We arrived in London August 30th. As stated in a previous issue, we had received no human invitations or calls, and no "open door" was apparent to sight. Following six weeks of oral silence on ship (we encountered not a single Christian among our five hundred fellow passengers), a further period of four weeks of inactivity followed our landing. But our hearts were kept in perfect peace. By Divine grace we were enabled to "rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him" (Psa 37:7). We are his servants, therefore, it is His to command, ours to obey.
